Interview prep checklist for accounting & finance roles

A practical checklist to walk into any finance interview ready — technical, behavioral, and logistical.

Research the company and the role

Know the company's industry, size, and where they are in their lifecycle (pre-IPO, private equity-owned, mature public). Read the job description closely and map your experience to each requirement — the specific skills, systems, and level they've scoped.

Be ready on the technical

Refresh the fundamentals relevant to the role: the close process, key areas of US GAAP (revenue recognition, leases, whatever's central to the job), SOX and controls if it's an audit or controller seat, and the ERP or systems they use.

Have concrete examples ready — a complex reconciliation you owned, a process you improved, an implementation you were part of.

Prepare behavioral stories (STAR)

Use the Situation–Task–Action–Result format for stories about handling deadlines, resolving a disagreement, catching an error, or leading a team through busy season. Two or three strong, specific stories beat a dozen vague ones.

Bring smart questions — and handle logistics

Ask about the team's priorities for the first 90 days, what success looks like, and why the seat is open. Thoughtful questions signal seriousness.

Confirm the time, format, and interviewers in advance, test your video setup, and have your résumé and notes handy. When you're on our platform, our team helps coordinate the scheduling so you can focus on the conversation.
